Abstract

In this study a simplified correlation chart has been proposed for predicting the actual moment capacity of column of a multi-storeyed symmetric building frame subjected to seismic loading. The moment capacity of column obtained from the proposed correlation chart is minimum among all possible load combination associated with earthquake load. Hence the column moment capacity will be used to calculate moment capacity ratio of beam-column joint. Variation of axial forces in column during earthquake load has been studied using results of numerical analysis of multi-storeyed building frame of varying heights. The correlation table suggested both for exterior column and interior column and the same has been validated with designed building frame. The validation is found satisfactory and agreeing with the proposed coefficients. The proposed correlation data is very useful for design engineer as it gives quick solution to multivariate problems for calculation of moment capacity ratio.
