Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to study the behavior and strength of reinforced concrete wide beams with headed bar lap splice of tension steel reinforcement. An experimental program was conducted on eight simply supported concrete beams. The main studied variables were: lap splices length, spacing of vertical stirrups in the splice zone, and the cut-off ratio of the spliced bars. It was concluded that for the use of the lap splice length as that recommended by ACI 318-08, without the use of stirrups at the spliced zone, the change of the cut off ratio from 50% to 100% resulted in a brittle failure and a reduction in ductility. On the other hand, there is a drastic increase in ductility of beams when stirrups in the lap zone were used.
