Editor-in-Chief of IREASE

Biographical note of the Editor-in-Chief:

Ethirajan Rathakrishnan (Born on May 25, 1953) is Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. He received the B.Sc. degree in Mathematics from the Madras University, India, in 1973, the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics - Rarefied and Continuum Regimes from the IIT Madras, India, in 1978 and 1986, respectively.

He is well-known internationally for his research in the area of high-speed jets. The limit for the passive control of jets, called Rathakrishnan Limit, is his contribution to the field of jet research, and the concept of breathing blunt nose (BBN), which reduces the positive pressure at the nose and increases the low-pressure at the base simultaneously, is his contribution to drag reduction at hypersonic speeds.

He has published a large number of research articles in many reputed international journals. He is Fellow of many professional societies, including the Royal Aeronautical Society. Professor Rathakrishnan serves as the Editor-In-Chief of the International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME) journal.

He has authored 10 books: Gas Dynamics, 4th ed. (PHI Learning, New Delhi, 2012); Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, 2nd ed. (PHI Learning, New Delhi 2005); Fluid Mechanics: An Introduction, 3rd ed. (PHI Learning, New Delhi 2012); Gas Tables, 3rd ed. (Universities Press, Hyderabad, India, 2012); Instrumentation, Measurements, and Experiments in Fluids (CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, Boca Raton, USA, 2007); Theory of Compressible Flows (Maruzen Co., Ltd. Tokyo, Japan, 2008); Gas Dynamics Work Book 2nd ed. (Praise Worthy Prize, Napoli, Italy, 2013); Applied Gas Dynamics (John Wiley, New Jersey, USA, 2010); Elements of Heat Transfer, (CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, Boca Raton, USA, 2012) and Theoretical Aerodynamics, (John Wiley, New Jersey, USA, 2013).

 RELEVANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO TECHNOLOGY

- A limit for jet control termed Rathakrishnan Limit is the contribution by Rathakrishnan to jet research (Rathakrishnan E., Experimental Studies on the Limiting Tab, AIAA Journal, Vol. 47, No. 10, October 2009, pp. 2475-2485).

- Positioned twin-vortices behind flat plate at Reynolds number as high as 5000 and brought out the physics behind this possibility at Reynolds number which is greatly lager than the limiting Reynolds number of around 160 reported by Von Karman for position twin vortices behind a circular cylinder.

- Introduced and demonstrated the concept of Breathing Blunt Nose (BBN), which decreases the high pressure at the nose and increases the low pressure at the base, resulting in considerable drag reduction, without any adverse effect, of a blunt-nosed body meant for hypersonic operation.

- Proved with quantitative and qualitative proof that the correctly supersonic free jet issuing a nozzle is wave dominated.

- Institutionalized the axial coordinate relation for Laval nozzle design.

- Demonstrated that the splitter plate to weaken the vortices at the base of a bluff body should be off-centered.

- Demonstrated that overexpanded jets can operate Hartmann-Sprenger tube as efficiently as underexpanded jets.

- Demonstrated that correctly expanded jets are also wave dominated.
