Abstract

Partial discharges (PD) measurement has been used as a tool to indicate or detect the electrical deterioration in high voltage apparatus. PD means localized dielectric breakdown of the small portion of the electric insulation will lead to insulation breakdown. Since, PD is a silent attack for insulating systems, various techniques and analysis was carried out in order to monitoring the status of a defects and control for further damage. This paper reviews the PD measurement techniques viz, chemical detection and acoustic detection used to detect SF6 decomposition in gas-insulated substations (GIS) due to PD phenomenon. Understanding the phenomenon and their detection techniques will be used to choose the most efficiency technique to detect the defects in GIS system
